Cunning Running Software Ltd awarded Royal Air Force contract for Force Protection Planning Tool

Cunning Running Software Ltd (CRSL) has been awarded a contract by the UK Ministry of Defence to provide its Force Protection Planning Tool (FPPT) to the Royal Air Force.

The contract covers the continued provision and support of FPPT, CRSL’s geospatial planning software designed to support force protection decision-making in both deployed and domestic environments.

FPPT enables users to assess terrain, analyse lines of sight, model protective layouts, and identify vulnerabilities and key areas of interest using integrated geospatial data. The system supports planners in developing informed, repeatable, and defensible protection strategies prior to deployment.

This award comes at a time when defence organisations are operating in increasingly complex and unpredictable environments. The ability to assess risk, test assumptions, and plan effectively before committing resources is becoming a critical component of operational success.

Flt Lt Wayne Elliott, OC Counter Threats at RAF Honington said:

“Cunning Running’s Force Protection Planning Tool is a critical enabler for Royal Air Force operational support and training activity. It allows our personnel to systematically assess risk, develop proportionate and defensible force protection measures, and clearly articulate residual risk to commanders. Its consistent use across operational planning, homeland security and training has strengthened assurance, decision‑making and confidence at every level.”

Phil Cowell, Head of Operations at Cunning Running Software Ltd, stated:

Effective force protection depends on understanding the environment before decisions are made. This contract reflects a continued focus on improving how those assessments are carried out using data-driven analysis. It builds on an established relationship and supports the continued use and development of FPPT in force protection planning.”

The contract includes software licences, training provision, and ongoing support, ensuring the RAF can continue to develop and sustain its force protection planning capability as threats evolve.

Cunning Running Software Ltd has over 30 years of experience developing geospatial analysis tools for defence, law enforcement, and emergency services, supporting organisations in planning, risk assessment, and operational decision-making.
